Surgical Experience

General Surgery Dr. Nilesh Doctor is trained in General Surgery in India and in the UK at busy Surgical Units at University Hospitals. This involved a Rotating Residency and included Ward duties, Operative Experience, Outpatient Clinics, and Academic activities like Meetings and teaching activities for medical students.

Coloproctology and Upper G1 Surgery During the year Dr. Nilesh spent at Chase Farm Hospital, Dr. Nilesh worked with Mr. M. W.M. Ward and Mr. J. Bolton. Dr. Nilesh assisted and performed all types of colonic resections, ileal pouch-anal operations, sphincter repairs, and routine anal surgery.

Hepatopancreatobiliary & Liver Transplantation Surgery At the Royal Free Hospital, Dr. Nilesh worked with Prof. B.R. Davidson, who has a special interest in Hepatopancreatobiliary and Liver Transplantation Surgery.

Clinical Experience: The Royal Free has a well-known Liver Unit and Dr. Nilesh participated in the diagnostic workup and surgical management of patients referred here. Dr. Nilesh assisted and performed hepatic resections, pancreatic resections, and bile duct reconstructions and was responsible for their postoperative management. As part of the Liver Transplant team, Dr. Nilesh independently retrieved donor livers and kidneys, assisted and performed orthotopic liver transplanation and was involved in their postoperative care. As Senior Registrar on the Liver Unit, Dr. Nilesh independently performed Liver transplants and trained the newer Fellows in Organ Retrievals.

Laparoscopic Surgery Dr. Nilesh began his laparoscopic training after obtaining certification at the Basic Laparoscopy Course in Dundee under the guidance of Prof. Cuschieri. Dr. Nilesh has performed independently a large number of diagnostic laparoscopies, laparoscopic cholecystectomies and appendisectomies. Dr. Nilesh is familiar with laparoscopic hernia repairs, fundoplications and colonic mobilisation.

As Consultant Surgeon in Mumbai: After being appointed to the staff of Jaslok and Bhatia Hospitals as a GI Surgeon with a special interest in Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgeon, Dr. Nilesh have developed and established a referral practise in this specialty. Currently, his practise involves:

  • Evaluation for obstructive jaundice

  • Liver Resections and Transplantation

  • Hepatobiliary Oncology: Hepatocellular carcinoma and Cholangiocarcinoma Pancreatic and Ampullary cancer

  • GI Oncology, including Gastric and Colon cancers

  • Acute pancreatitis

  • Chronic pancreatitis surgery

  • Biliary strictures

  • Choledochal cysts

  • Laparoscopic surgery

  • Portal Hypertension

  • Inflammatory Bowel disease

  • Benign GI conditions

  • Pediatric Hepatobiliary Diseases like Hepatoblastoma, Choledochal cysts.

Liver Transplantation We performed the first Living Related Liver Transplant in the country in November 1998, and recently performed cadaver liver transplantation. On January 6, 2005, we performed the first successful Cadaver Liver Transplantation in Western India at Jaslok Hospital and Research Center. We have subsequently performed 16 Liver Transplants at Jaslok Hospital.

Academics From February 2006, our Institute is recognized for DNB in GI Surgery, for which Dr. Nilesh is a teacher. Dr. Nilesh is involved with Teaching and Academic activities at both Institutes. We have a post-MS GI Fellowship program at Jaslok Hospital and a GI and Laparoscopic Fellowship Certificate course at the Bhatia Hospital, for which Dr. Nilesh is the Co-ordinator. This is in addition to the DNB program in General Surgery at the Jaslok Hospital. Dr. Nilesh is on the Faculty of the Ethicon Institute of Surgical Education and have been involved with teaching Laparoscopic Surgery to a large number of Surgeons from all over the country. As part of our Academic Program, Dr. Nilesh have organised Conferences at Jaslok Hospital on Gallbladder Surgery, Hiatus Hernia, and Colorectal Diseases..

At Bhatia, in 2007-2008, Dr. Nilesh have chaired the PostGraduate Course in GI Surgery, an unique lecture series prepared by the Senior Residents on a specific theme like Colorectal, Pancreas, etc.

Dr. Nilesh is involved with the National Liver Foundation, an NGO with an aim to create awareness about liver diseases. Dr. Nilesh is also Joint Secretary of the ZTCC, a semi-Government autonomous body responsible for the development of Cadaver Organ Transplantation in the city of Mumbai. Dr. Nilesh is also a member of the NODC (National Organ Donation Campaign), an umbrella organization of several NGO’s responsible for spreading awareness about cadaver organ donation.

Research & Academic Interest

  • Autologous Fibrin glue: We evaluated the results of a novel autologous fibrin sealant in a porcine hepatectomy model, which were subsequently published in the British Journal of Surgery.

  • Percutaneous Stents: Dr. Nilesh has retrospectively evaluated our experience in percutaneous stent placement. The Royal Free Hospital has the largest experience in percultaneous transhepatic Cholangiography in the UK. The findings have been presented at British, European, Indian, and International Meetings and have also been published.

  • Laparoscopic Surgery: Dr. Nilesh have analysed the results of managing patients with biliary problems after lap cholecystectomy. We maintain a prospective database of Laparoscopic cholecystectomy in India, with respect to preoperative evaluation and operative techniques.

  • Pancreatic surgery: We maintain a prospective database of patients with Acute and Chronic pancreatitis, and some of these results have been presented at Meetings.

  • Liver Surgery: Analysis and presentation of data on Liver resections.
